Ecosystem Services

Join the Squam Lakes Association for an educational walk at Chamberlain Reynolds Memorial Forest. As we hike, we'll discuss the different benefits that our ecosystems provide. Being aware of the different ecosystems in the watershed and what they provide is important for how we appreciate and protect them. This is a great program for anyone looking to learn more about their surroundings and think more about the ways we interact with the environment.

Think Like a Fish: Seasonal Fish Behavior

Soon enough, anglers will return to Squam Lake by water and by shore to target large and small-mouth bass for their spring spawn. But have you ever wondered why these fish start bedding now? Or how they spent their winter? Come join us at the Squam Lakes Association for a roughly 2-mile kayak trip around Piper’s Cove and learn about how the seasons affect fish behavior.

Volunteer: Water Quality Day

Join us for a boat ride on Squam Lake to help collect a water column sample at Moultonborough Bay as part of our summer water-quality monitoring program. We will learn about how the SLA monitors Squam by completing a set of measurements together and then enjoy a lunch on Bowman Island.

Introduction to Sprint Canoeing

Many of us have heard of canoeing and kayaking, but a lesser known variation of the paddling sports is the sprint canoe. Stop by the Squam Lakes Association to learn about the sport of Spring Canoeing from competing Sprint Canoe athlete, Ernest Byers!

Volunteer: Weed Watchers Training Day

Join the Squam Lakes Association for the first Weed Watchers training session of the season and learn how to identify aquatic invasives. After this training session, you will be able to look for invasive species like variable milfoil on your own and know how to report sightings on Squam as an official Weed Watcher!

Moss Mosey

Come join us on a 2.0 mile hike around Belknap wood to identify and learn about different moss species. On July 19 from 10:00 pm to 12:00 pm Squam Lakes Conservation Corps member Emma Murray will lead an exploratory hike about mosses.

Volunteer: Water Quality Day

Join us for a boat ride to help collect water column samples at Loon Reef and Moultonborough Bay as part of our summer water-quality monitoring program. We will learn about how the SLA monitors Squam by completing a set of measurements together and then enjoy a lunch on Moon or Bowman Island.

Paddle the Lake

Do you want to learn more about navigating Squam Lake? Are you camping on our public islands and want to get more comfortable navigating a canoe with camping supplies? Join the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) on an out and back paddle to Moon and Bowman islands on Saturday, July 26th from 8:00 am – 12:00 pm. During our paddle we’ll go over how to navigate open water, identify the Squam islands, learn how safely canoe, and explore the islands trails and beaches.

Volunteer: Trail Work Day on Old Bridle Path

Join us for a hike up West Rattlesnake to help clear water bars and maintain the corridor along Old Bridle Path, the most heavily traveled trail in the SLA network.
