Volunteer: Trail Work Day on Old Bridle Path

July 27, 2025 @ 9:00 am1:00 pm

Old Bridle Path Trail Workday

Join us for a day on the trails hiking up West Rattlesnake via Old Bridle Path to clear water bars and maintain the trail corridor! We will start our day by meeting at the West Rattlesnake parking lot at 9am. From there we will hike toward the summit and use dirt working tools such as mattocks, mcleods and hoes to clear water bars on the trail. Water bars divert water and runoff away from the path and help prevent erosion. This will be a 0.9-mile hike to the summit of West Rattlesnake (almost 2 miles out and back).

Once we reach the top, we will stop to enjoy lunch and take in the mountain's renowned views of Squam Lake before hiking back down to the parking lot. Come out and bring your friends to enjoy the most popular trail in the SLA network and help give back to the hiking community!

Minors must be accompanied by an adult, and registration is required for this free event.

What to bring

Snacks, water, bug spray, hiking boots and extra layers. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own safety glasses, working gloves, and dirt working tools, but SLA can provide any of those materials if needed. Don't forget to bring a lunch for the summit!

Meet your guides

Hunter Hine is an LRCC member serving as a Volunteer Program Assistant with the SLA for the 2025 season. He hails from Baltimore County, Maryland, where he previously worked in journalism and public affairs. He loves wading into streams and waving around a fly-fishing rod for hours. Sometimes, he catches a fish that way.

Location

West Rattlesnake Mountain Trailhead
About one third of the Rattlesnakes are located on the Armstrong Natural Area, owned by the University of New Hampshire. Five Finger Point is also owned by UNH, and the lands surrounding these conservation areas are privately owned. Other partners include Squam Lakes Conservation Society (who owns East Rattlesnake Preserve), Pinehurst Association (of which Lakes Region Conservation Trust holds a conservation easement on a portion of land), Webster Land Co, and Rockywold Deephaven Camps (where SLCS holds an easement on a portion of land).
