Join Director of Education, Kyle Salmons, for a mix of gentle hike and steep climb on an out-and-back hike up Cotton Mountain. Start 2025 off with a winter hike up to the summit of the first (or last, depending on your perspective) mountain on the Squam Range. Nestled close to the town of Holderness, Cotton Mountain is the perfect winter hike to get used to steep terrain without the risk of being out in the wilderness.
Every year, on the first warm, rainy nights of spring, thousands of salamanders and frogs migrate to vernal pools and other wetlands to breed in a phenomenon known as “Big Night.” Sadly, many are killed when they must cross roads. Join longtime Salamander Crossing Brigade coordinator Brett Amy Thelen to discover the magic of Big Night — and to learn how community scientists in the Granite State are coming together to help migrating amphibians survive the most dangerous journey of their lives.
Join Director of Education, Kyle Salmons, on a 2.4 mile loop around Chamberlain-Reynolds Memorial Forest. This is an easy hike with very little elevation gain. It's the perfect opportunity to practice using snow shoes or to put a new pair to the test! Chamberlain-Reynolds Memorial Forest also offers a unique view of the lake in winter from the many coves and beaches along the way.
-- This event has been cancelled due to cold temperatures -- Join the Lakes Region Conservation Corps on their first guided hike of the season! Come meet some of our LRCC members and enjoy one of the best lesser known loop hikes in the area. Located just past Burleigh Farm, the Livermore loop offers a fantastic view of the lake and one of the best spots to sip hot cocoa and enjoy a winter lunch on the trail.
Join Lakes Region Conservation Corps members on a moderate 3 mile loop around Five Finger Point. Explore each cove and "finger" of this northern piece of Squam Lake. The Fiver Finger Point trail will give you a unique view of the lake from the shores of Squam.
Do you love hiking? Do you love dogs? What about hiking and dogs? Join the us on a hike through Whitten Woods to learn about best practices when hiking with dogs! Lakes Region Conservation Corps (LRCC) AmeriCorps member, Miranda Fisher, will lead the hike and teach participants about the best ways to recreate with dogs individually and in a group setting.
They might not have their leaves but we can still ID trees! Join the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) on a 2.2 mile hike through Chamberlain Reynolds Memorial Forest to learn all about winter Tree ID. During the hike we will learn how to identify and distinguish trees based on bark, buds and needles.
The Motus Wildlife Tracking System is an international collaborative research network that uses cooperative automated radio telemetry to track small flying organisms (birds, bats, and insects).
Come join us for a full moon hike! Many Indigenous tribes have a ceremony appreciating the moons cycle each full moon. Whether you are curious about Indigenous culture or not, this is the perfect time to settle in to the new year and appreciate the environment around us!
