Science Pub – Lakes Region Motus Tracking System

February 11 @ 5:30 pm7:00 pm

The Motus Wildlife Tracking System is an international collaborative research network that uses cooperative automated radio telemetry to track small flying organisms (birds, bats, and insects). Lightweight transmitters are affixed to the animals and then tracked by a network of strategically-placed receiver stations. Typically, the stations are located on high terrain where there is a good “viewshed” to maximize detections.

As of this writing there are over 2,000 receiving stations in 34 countries and more than 50,000 animals tagged. Here is New Hampshire we currently have at least 20 receiver stations. In 2021, a receiver station was installed in New Hampton and in 2024 a second was added on Red Hill in Moultonborough.

Iain has been involved in coordinating the installation of those two local stations and has been tracking the bird species recorded by both towers. He will share the stories of some of these birds and discuss the wider implications for conservation of the Motus system.

Presentation starts at 6:00pm. Doors open at 5:30. Please save room to enjoy dinner beforehand!
