More bark than bite: Winter tree ID

February 9 @ 1:00 pm3:00 pm

Today's Adventure Ecology:

They might not have their leaves but we can still ID trees! Join the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) on a 2.2 mile hike through Chamberlain Reynolds Memorial Forest on Sunday, February 9th from 1-3 to learn all about winter Tree ID. During the hike we will learn how to identify and distinguish trees based on bark, buds and needles. Lakes Region Conservation Corps (LRCC) AmeriCorps member, Emma Murray, a winter enthusiast will lead the hike.

Leaves are the most common and easiest way to Identify different tree species but the small details of trees can tell a big story. You can Identify trees only using the bark and bud very accurately. Evergreen trees make this easier for us by retaining their leaves year round classifying them as “ever- green”. Participants will learn identifiers they can use all across the globe to identify and appreciate trees year round. The blanketing of snow every year highlights the beauty of the evergreen trees so come out and experience this with us while gaining a new appreciation for the smaller details of the trees you see everyday!

All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by adults.
