This fun afternoon connects the mission of the National Park Service to our own backyard, teaching you how to be a real-life protector of natural spaces.

    Join the Squam Lakes Association for a hands-on program where we’ll practice the age-old tradition of knots! We’ll start with the basics, learning both how to tie a knot and its many functions. After practicing, we’ll put our new skills to the test by building a shelter.

Using leaves and other interesting materials found in the natural environment, we’ll transform old clothes/fabric into unique creations. Whether you consider yourself an artist or not, this simple process is accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

    Join the Squam Lakes Association for a fun, hands-on Bioinventory Bio-Blitz! Learn how to use the Seek app as a tool for observing and documenting the plants and animals that inhabit the Squam watershed; just bring your curiosity and a smartphone!

    Spot the Songbird Bingo

    June 13 @ 7:30 am–10:30 am

    Looking to learn some basic birding identification skills, log a few new species, or simply enjoy a walk through the wooded morning chorus in good company? Join LRCC member Ally Facella on Saturday, June 13, 7:30am - 10:30am at Chamberlain Reynolds Memorial Forest for Songbird Bingo! This program will focus on learning bird identification skills as a group, primarily through sight and sound while filling out a bingo card.

    Arboretum Tour

    Join Lakes Region Conservation Corps Member Chloe at Squam Lakes Association (SLA) for an arboretum tour and mindfulness workshop. Immerse yourself in the SLA campus’ Community Arboretum while learning how to identify common New England tree species and care for native fruit trees. We will also explore our own connection to nature through guided mindfulness activities inspired by the arboretum.

    Who’s that Macroinvertebrate?

    July 11 @ 9:00 am–11:00 am

    Did you know your backyard stream could be teaming with an important and unknown crowd of underwater bugs? Macroinvertebrates are a diverse set of organisms that play an important role in our aquatic ecosystems, also serving as great bioindicators for pollution. Learn more about this fascinating field of study with an informative and interactive program about macroinvertebrate sampling. Be ready to get your feet wet as YOU will be trying to catch and identify these little critters following a kick netting demonstration.
