Hibernate, Migrate, Adapt: Belknap Woods

November 8 @ 10:00 am12:00 pm

Today's Adventure Ecology:

Join the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) on Saturday, November 8th from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm at Belknap Woods for an adventure ecology exploring what wild NH residents do to survive winter. Mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and plants all have to use different strategies and adaptations to live through cold and lean months. Beautiful Belknap contains many habitats for hibernation to explore. Come learn about some fascinating survival methods while enjoying an easy 2 mile hike.

We will meet at Belknap Woods Parking Lot at 9:45 am to fill out liability waivers and hit the trail at 10:00 am.

All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by adults. Registration is required for this free event.

What to bring

Please bring a water bottle and a snack.
As it is beginning to get chilly, please dress in layers and bring a hat, gloves, coat, etc. needed. As there are many wetland areas on the trail, water resistant hiking shoes are best.

Meet this week's guide

My name is Danielle Dexter and I am from Keene, New Hampshire. I graduated from Keene State College in 2024 where I studied Environmental Studies and Spanish. I developed a deep love for nature by growing up spending my time in the woods and lakes of NH; hiking, day dreaming, and looking for wildlife. Travel, experiential learning, and service based learning have greatly influenced my education and interests. I am excited to be back in my beautiful home state to learn more about lake conservation while helping to teach the public about all things ecology.

Location

Belknap Woods
Parking for Belknap Woods is located on the south boundary of Squam Lake off of NH-25B. When traveling southeast on US-3 towards Meredith, turn left on to NH-25B. Parking is roughly a mile down NH-25B on the right side of the road. Parking space is limited but you can park next to trailhead and across the street on the shoulder.
SLA's Adventure Ecology trips
Throughout the year, the Squam Lakes Association offers free programs open to the public on a variety of nature and conservation related topics.

The Adventure Ecology programs are presented by the Lakes Region Conservation Corps members who perform important conservation work in support of the Association's mission.
Lakes Region Conservation Corps
The Lakes Region Conservation Corps (LRCC) is an AmeriCorps service program that develops skills and experiences for conservation professionals. The program provides hands-on conservation work experience and numerous certifications over a broad range of areas.
