Fun Fungi! Identification & Appreciation Walk

Today's Adventure Ecology:
Join us for a fun Saturday dedicated to mushrooms! We will meet at the Five Finger Point trailhead to gain some background information on mushroom anatomy, types, and foraging. After practicing our identification skills we will depart from the parking lot and do the leisurely 3 mile hike around Five Finger Point. Along the way we will practice our searching, identification, and appreciation skills of these cool organisms. Participants are welcome to forage if they feel inclined, but the SLA will not be providing any assurance on mushroom edibility. Mushrooms can only be positively identified by a professional mycologist, therefore any foraging will be the assumed risk of the participant. We anticipate the hike should take no longer than 2.5 hours. The program will be complete after finishing the hike. Participants are welcome to hang around and socialize or ask about other great hikes in the network!

About one third of the Rattlesnakes are located on the Armstrong Natural Area, owned by the University of New Hampshire. Five Finger Point is also owned by UNH, and the lands surrounding these conservation areas are privately owned. Other partners include Squam Lakes Conservation Society (who owns East Rattlesnake Preserve), Pinehurst Association (of which Lakes Region Conservation Trust holds a conservation easement on a portion of land), Webster Land Co, and Rockywold Deephaven Camps (where SLCS holds an easement on a portion of land).
What to bring
Please bring shoes you feel comfortable hiking in for an extended duration. We will supply guides and supplemental educational tools. Other items worth bringing is water, snacks, rain gear, and foraging tools (if that interests you).
Meet this week's guide
Kevin Jones is a passionate 2026 LRCC Education and Outreach Assistant who recently graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a conservation degree. He is an avid birder and angler with a love for outdoor recreation. Kevin is knowledgeable in a variety of outdoor topics and ready to learn or share with others.
