Fire is Alive

May 18 @ 2:00 pm4:00 pm

Join SLA's Corbin Faidley on a 2.0 mile hike up Old Bridal Path on Sunday, May 18th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. exploring Fire ecology! During the hike you will learn about various fire adaptations plants and animals have developed to help thrive in these conditions and gain a general understanding of fire behavior.

Fire is an essential element in our forests and is a crucial part of how our forest cycle nutrients like phosphorus, calcium, and other minerals. If you are curious how fire promotes biodiversity and how pine trees can protect themselves in a fire, join our program to learn more.

Location

West Rattlesnake Mountain Trailhead
About one third of the Rattlesnakes are located on the Armstrong Natural Area, owned by the University of New Hampshire. Five Finger Point is also owned by UNH, and the lands surrounding these conservation areas are privately owned. Other partners include Squam Lakes Conservation Society (who owns East Rattlesnake Preserve), Pinehurst Association (of which Lakes Region Conservation Trust holds a conservation easement on a portion of land), Webster Land Co, and Rockywold Deephaven Camps (where SLCS holds an easement on a portion of land).

What to bring

Participants should have appropriate attire and layering for variable spring hiking. Extra layers, comfortable water-resistant hiking shoes, and snowshoes and/or microspikes may be needed depending on conditions. Other hiking gear may be available upon request. Snacks are welcome as we will be taking breaks on the trail.

Feel free to reach out to the SLA with any questions!

Meet this week's guide

Corbin Faidley is an SLA trails and access assistant. Before coming to serve as a trails and access assistant at SLA, he spent a season in central Colorado doing trail work and occasional fire mitigation. He also spent last spring working as a wilderness firefighter in North Carolina doing prescribed fires. He loves the outdoors and learning how he can be a steward of the ecosystems he lives in.
SLA's Adventure Ecology trips
Throughout the year, the Squam Lakes Association offers free programs open to the public on a variety of nature and conservation-related topics.

The Adventure Ecology programs are presented by the Lakes Region Conservation Corps members who perform important conservation work in support of the Association's mission.
