Who’s the Manager: Land Use and History Walk

March 20 @ 10:00 am12:00 pm

Today's Adventure Ecology:

Ever wonder who’s in charge of your favorite hiking trail – come find out the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) land management hike. We will meet at the Chamberlain Reynolds trailhead on Thursday, March 20, from 10:00am-12:00pm for a peaceful walk through the woods. This hike will be roughly 1.5 miles on relatively flat terrian. While walking we will do a deeper dive into what organizations play a role in maintaining the land and trails. We will also explore the history of Chamberlain Reynolds and how the New England Forestry Foundation maintains the land.

Collaboration between organizations in the Lakes Region and NH at large is crucial to helping maintain a healthy watershed. At the SLA we work with multiple different partners to protect and maintain many of the trails in the area as a way to promote conservation and recreation in the watershed. It’s important to recognize our partners, their specialties, and the work they do! This hike will be the perfect opportunity to look re-focus before spring and take a moment of gratitude for all the work that goes into protecting the Squam watershed.

All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by adults.

Location

Chamberlain-Reynolds Memorial Forest, West Fire Road parking lot
Chamberlain-Reynolds Memorial Forest is located off of College Rd. in Center Harbor, NH. This 169-acre forest is owned by the New England Forestry Foundation and has approximately 5 miles of trails managed by the Squam Lakes Association.

What to bring

Participants should be sure to have appropriate attire and layering for winter hiking. Extra layers, comfortable water resistant hiking shoes, and snowshoes and/or microspikes may be needed depending on conditions. The SLA can provide snowshoes & microspikes for up to six participants. Other snow hiking gear may be available upon request. Snacks are welcome as we will be taking breaks on the trail.

Not sure what to pack? Check out our Winter Day Hiking Checklist for some ideas. Feel free to reach out to the SLA with any questions!
