Walk on the Wild Side: Winter Animal Tracks & Signs

Winter has set in and New Hampshire is once again blanketed in snow. Much of the wildlife that flourished in the warmer months is nowhere to be seen, but a stroll in the snow will reveal that there are many furry and feathered residents that stay here all year long! Join the Squam Lakes Association to explore the clues wildlife leave behind as they brave the New Hampshire winter. We will identify animal tracks and signs that can be found throughout the Squam watershed and learn how they can tell us about the health of our watershed!

We will begin in the SLA Great Room with a short lesson on what to look for and how to identify common tracks before heading outside to put our knowledge to the test! This is a perfect way for people of all ages to enjoy New Hampshire's chilly winter days.

Hot cocoa, tea, and coffee will be available to keep everyone nice and warm!

All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Squam Lakes Association, Holderness NH

The Squam Lakes Association is dedicated to conserving for public benefit the natural beauty, peaceful character and resources of the watershed. In collaboration with local and state partners the SLA promotes the protection, careful use and shared enjoyment of the lakes, mountains, forests, open spaces and wildlife of the Squam Lakes Region.

Please pack snacks, water, and a lunch! We will be taking breaks on the trail as needed.

Participants should be sure to have appropriate attire and layering for winter hiking. Extra layers, comfortable water resistant hiking shoes, and snowshoes and/or microspikes may be needed depending on conditions. The SLA can provide snowshoes & microspikes for up to six participants. Other snow hiking gear may be available upon request.

Kyle Salmons is the Director of Education at SLA and first came to the Squam Lakes Association in 2015 as a Squam Conservation Intern.

Kyle grew up in western New York where he studied chemistry at the State University of New York at Oswego.

In his free time, Kyle can be found jumping off a paddleboard, playing board games, or, if you look closely enough, huddled under a pile of blankets listening to his newest Sci-Fi novel.

Throughout the year, the Squam Lakes Association offers free programs open to the public on a variety of nature and conservation related topics.

The Adventure Ecology programs are presented by the Lakes Region Conservation Corps members who perform important conservation work in support of the Association's mission.
