Sun Printing
August 30, 2025 @ 1:00 pm–4:00 pm

Today's Adventure Ecology:
Join the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) on Saturday, August 30th for a drop in workshop on Sun Printing. We will hold this event from 1:00 pm-4:00 pm at the SLA barn building. We will have bandannas available for printing and all other materials needed for the craft. If you would like to bring your own item to design feel free, it will need to be 100% cotton or silk. This will be a child friendly activity the only harsh items we will be using will be acrylic paint so feel free to bring along your little ones. LRCC member Emma Murray will be leading this workshop along with Dani Dexter.
Cyano-typing has been used for generations to capture the images of natural items on a canvas. In 1842 it was originally practiced by Sir John Hersche as the first form of photography. The mixture of iron salts and paper created a blue background which coined the term “blueprint”. Photography has grown passed cyano-typing but is still being used widely by textile artists across the globe to achieve that beautiful negative imprint.
All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by adults.
What to bring
We will provide everything you need for the activity but if you would like to bring your own clothing or cloth item to upcycle that would be super fun! No other materials required.
Meet this week's guide
Hello! My name is Emma Murray and I’m a recent graduate of SUNY ESF College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, New York. I just graduated with a degree in Environmental Biology and applied my love of silviculture to get a minor in Forestry. I adore being in nature and sharing tons of fun facts about trees, you’ve been warned if you ever go on a walk with me! If I’m not in the woods hiking around for cool plants you can find me baking, reading a cool fantasy book or working on one of my knitting projects.
