Squam Salamander Brigade Volunteer Training

March 13 @ 6:30 pm9:00 pm

Squam Salamander Brigade - Volunteer Training

Come spring, amphibians will begin migrating from their woodland wintering sites to their breeding grounds which are located in lowland wetlands and vernal pools. One of the dangers for them during this time is crossing roads. Many of our roads cut through these habitats and cause a high mortality to many of these amphibians. Luckily, the Squam Salamander Brigade is to the rescue!

Join us at the Squam Lakes Association to watch the Salamander Crossing Brigade Workshop, presented by the Harris Center for Conservation Education, to learn how you can volunteer to help transport these critters safely across the road and record their migration numbers. The meeting will feature refreshments including coffee, tea, hot cocoa, and snacks. You may also attend the webinar virtually and can register for the event by visiting the workshop webpage.

Attendance to this volunteer webinar is required for participation in the salamander brigade. Please register below if you plan on joining us in-person.

Every year, hundreds of volunteers around New Hampshire wait for "big nights" - rainy evenings that meet the ideal weather conditions for migrations - to visit sites where amphibians cross the road. Dressed in high visibility safety gear, the volunteers help carry salamanders, frogs, and toads across the street. Volunteers also help identify and tally the number of each species that they find at their site.
