Lost Farms & Found Bearings: A Quest Through the Forest
July 25 @ 10:00 am–1:00 pm

Today's Program:
Step off the beaten path with the Squam Lakes Association for a hands-on navigation adventure into New Hampshire’s past! Trade your screens for a physical baseplate compass as we explore an abandoned 19th-century sheep farm lost to time in the Homestead Forest Conservation Area. During this 90-minute, half-mile off-trail journey, you will learn to read landscape clues, dial real headings, and track down forgotten ruins hidden in the forest.
What to bring:
Participants should be comfortable exploring unfamiliar woods, wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, and come dressed for walking through off-trail brush. Participants should also bring water/snacks, sunscreen and bugspray. Grab your gear and step back in time—adventure awaits!
Meet this week's guide:
Diego Bautista Torres, who recently pivoted toward a career in environmental conservation, joined the Lakes Region Conservation Corps with a background in music production. After serving with AmeriCorps in the American Conservation Experience, he is eager to bring his technical knowledge and interpersonal skills to the Squam Lakes Association. As an Education and Outreach Assistant, Diego looks forward to protecting the watershed through community engagement, scientific monitoring, and hands-on conservation work.
Location:
Hugh Smith Rd, Ashland, NH 03217
