Art vs Science has been hotly debated for centuries, on this program at Chamberlain Reynolds Memorial Forest we will appreciate both! During the hike you will learn about the history and use of scientific drawing and be walked through the process of creating your own scientific drawing. Conservation corps member Emma Murray will lead this hike.
Not only were scientific drawings critical in understanding plant morphology before cameras were invented but also a great way to connect to the environment and deeply study an organism. Size, color, appendages, texture are all things you need to think about when doing a scientific drawing. Participants will gain an understanding of why scientific drawings were and are still used today and create their own masterpiece with taught observations. Scientific sketches can be used in textbooks but also in day to day life to connect with your environment, join us as we learn about how you can use both!
All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by adults.
Participants should have spring hiking gear and be prepared for rain or shine. Spring weather is variable so be prepared with layers and snacks.
If you would like to bring your own art equipment, you can, we will have some colored pencils, watercolors, pens, and paper.
Meet this week's guide
Hello! My name is Emma Murray and I’m a recent graduate of SUNY ESF College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, New York. I just graduated with a degree in Environmental Biology and applied my love of silviculture to get a minor in Forestry. I adore being in nature and sharing tons of fun facts about trees, you’ve been warned if you ever go on a walk with me! If I’m not in the woods hiking around for cool plants you can find me baking, reading a cool fantasy book or working on one of my knitting projects.
