Director of Conservation

We are seeking a Director of Conservation for full-time, benefited employment. The Director of Conservation (DOC) is responsible for maintaining the Squam Lakes Association’s robust conservation efforts in the Squam Lakes Watershed. The DOC will work with the Executive Director to implement the comprehensive watershed plan launched in 2020 and supervise conservation program-specific efforts of the SLA Lakes Region Conservation Corps (LRCC). Some of these critical duties include invasive specie management, including overseeing milfoil diving and the Lake Host program, overseeing the implementation of the LakeSmart program, and direct communication with the constituents of the Squam Lakes Association. The Director of Conservation accomplishes these conservation initiatives in collaboration with SLA staff, Lakes Region Conservation Corps AmeriCorps members, community volunteers, partner organizations, and contractors to fulfill the SLA’s conservation mission to conserve the Squam Lakes and watershed. The DOC is directly supervised by the Executive Director.

Watershed Plan Implementation Specialist

The Squam Lakes Association is seeking a Watershed Plan Implementation Specialist to help manage our water quality efforts. Primary duties include supporting staff, volunteers, and partners to conduct research, test and maintain laboratory operations. This position will also implement watershed plan efforts through field work that will include assessing shorelines and properties for conservation values through the LakeSmart program. They will provide invasive species control leadership and conduct restoration activities at watershed plan sites.

The Squam Lakes Association manages the Lakes Region Conservation Corps AmeriCorps program, and is one of eight host sites within the program. The program provides hands-on conservation work experience and numerous certifications over a broad range of areas.

SLA Seasonal Office Assistant

Responsibilities

  • Process campsite reservations, canoe and kayak rentals
  • Collect liability waivers and fees
  • Provide visitors with information via phone and email
  • Run the SLA gift store

Qualifications

  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and computers
  • Ability to work independently
  • Run the SLA gift store

Schedule

This is a part-time position, up to 35 hours per week. Position runs from May 25–Sep 2 with flexible scheduling throughout the week and weekends.

Benefits

$13–15 per hour, plus free boat rentals and discounts on camping.

JSLA Assistant Camp Director

Qualifications

  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old with a clean driving record
  • Have at least three years of teaching experience in a camp or environmental education center setting
  • Knowledge of natural history and/or environmental education
  • Previous experience working with and enjoy being with children in an outdoor setting
  • Ability to lead groups over rough terrain and be able to work both cooperatively and independently
  • Comfortable in a leadership role, have strong interpersonal skills, have an enthusiastic and positive attitude, a love of nature and have a willingness to learn.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, computer skills in areas such as word processing, spreadsheets, and a strong commitment to high quality customer service.
  • Experience in outdoor recreation activities (canoeing, kayaking, hiking, rock climbing, backpacking) encompassing strong safety ethic
  • Current certification in Lifeguarding, CPR and First Aid or an equivalent current certification is REQUIRED (we can help you obtain these)
  • Pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) & Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) is REQUIRED
  • Must be available for duration of program (6/10/2024-8/12/2024)

Schedule

This position can start as early as June 1, 2025. Must be availabe for staff training June 9–21, 2025 and camp June 23–August 11, 2025.

Hours

Mon–Fri, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some weekend days are required for all SLA staff.

JSLA Environmental Camp Leader

Qualifications

  • Applicants must be at least 16 years old with a clean driving record
  • Have an interest and general knowledge of natural history and/or environmental education
  • Must have previous experience working with and enjoy being with children
  • Experience creating fun environmental education learning opportunities is a plus
  • Experience in outdoor recreation activities (canoeing, kayaking, hiking, rock climbing, backpacking) encompassing strong safety ethic
  • Current certification in Lifeguarding, CPR and First Aid or an equivalent current certification is REQUIRED (we can help you obtain these before or during training)
  • Pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) & Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) is REQUIRED
  • Must be available for duration of program (6/9/2025-8/11/2025)

Schedule

Season begins with staff training on June 9, 2025 and ends on August 11, 2025.
