Read as the Lorax Does!

Ever wonder how a tree can tell its own story without speaking? If this sounds interesting to you, please join Lakes Region Conservation Corps members Leon and Macie for the Lesson: Read as the Lorax does! In this lesson, you’ll learn how seasonal growth creates rings made of light springwood/earlywood and darker summerwood/latewood—and how counting them can help estimate a tree’s age. You’ll also explore what’s happening inside the trunk by looking at key parts like the bark, phloem, and the cambium that help trees grow thicker. We’ll compare the look of hardwoods and softwoods, then discover why the same log can look totally different depending on how it’s cut. Finish by coloring and labeling paper “wood cookies” to see patterns you can actually spot.

This program is for ages 12 and up. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Just bring yourselves! All materials will be provided. This program will be held indoors at the Squam Lakes Association. Snacks and water are welcome.

The Adventure Ecology programs are presented by the Lakes Region Conservation Corps members who perform important conservation work in support of the Association's mission.
