SUMMARY:Botany Bonanza
DESCRIPTION:Today's Adventure Ecology:\n\nWe will be exploring Homestead forest trail on a 2.7 mile loop trail that takes you through a variety of terrain\, swamp\, caves\, deciduous forest and conifer forests. Squam Lakes conservation corps member Emma Murray will be leading this hike through this beautiful property maintained by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust. By the end of the hike you will be able to identify the trees and other plants that are giving you shade on your hikes. We will learn techniques you can use anywhere in the world to identify trees and be able to identify some native New Hampshire species. We will also see some smaller flowering plants like shrubs\, ferns\, flowers and moss. Join us for a fun adventure in botany. All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by adults.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n Register now\n\n \n \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\nWhat to bring\n\nParticipants should have variable weather hiking gear and be prepared for rain or shine. We recommend bug spray\, suncreen and plenty of water. \n\n\n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\nMeet this week's guide\n\nHello! My name is Emma Murray and I’m a recent graduate of SUNY ESF College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse\, New York. I just graduated with a degree in Environmental Biology and applied my love of silviculture to get a minor in Forestry. I adore being in nature and sharing tons of fun facts about trees\, you’ve been warned if you ever go on a walk with me! If I’m not in the woods hiking around for cool plants you can find me baking\, reading a cool fantasy book or working on one of my knitting projects. \n\n\n\n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\nLocation\n\nHomestead Forest Conservation Area\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Homestead Forest Trailhead Hugo Smith Rd\, Ashland\, NH\n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n\nHomestead Falls is a property maintainged by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust. Scattered throughout the forest are cellar holes and foundations which identify the locations of four of five farms known to have existed in the 1800s. A sixth farmhouse\, now owned by LRCT\, dates from about 1825. These structures bear witness to a tradition of homestead agriculture in rural New Hampshire and to the transition from fields back to forestland after these farms were abandoned.\n\n\n\n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\nSLA's Adventure Ecology trips\n\nThroughout the year\, the Squam Lakes Association offers free programs open to the public on a variety of nature and conservation related topics. The Adventure Ecology programs are presented by the Lakes Region Conservation Corps members who perform important conservation work in support of the Association's mission.\n\n\n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\nLakes Region Conservation Corps\n\nThe Lakes Region Conservation Corps (LRCC) is an AmeriCorps service program that develops skills and experiences for conservation professionals. The program provides hands-on conservation work experience and numerous certifications over a broad range of areas\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n Learn more about the LRCC program
