SUMMARY:Moth Madness!
DESCRIPTION:Today's Adventure Ecology:\n\nWhy do moths get a bad rap? While most other pollinators tuck in for the night\, moths emerge for the night shift and continue to pollinate after dark. Join us after-hours in the SLA Barn for a brief presentation on moth identification\, life cycles\, and their importance in our ecosystems. Following the presentation\, we will head outside and use lights to attract moths on large sheets for easy viewing. These light traps are an excellent way to safely observe the vast diversity of moths and other nighttime insects up close. Have your camera ready!It’s important to keep in mind that light traps will be the most successful on dry\, non-windy nights; therefore\, our moth catch rate can vary depending on the conditions. Feel free to stay the entire duration\, or head to bed early as we observe insects throughout the night. Hot chocolate\, tea\, and other sweets will be provided!This program is for all ages. In collaboration with local and state partners the SLA promotes the protection\, careful use and shared enjoyment of the lakes\, mountains\, forests\, open spaces and wildlife of the Squam Lakes Region.\n\n\n\n  \n  \n	\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n	\n\n\n\n\nWhat to bring:\n\nParticipants should bring layers for a potentially chilly night\, water\, a flashlight\, and mosquito repellent (plant-based is preferred to avoid repelling insects we want to attract!). Other items participants may consider bringing are lawn chairs\, bug head nets\, and a camera. Quick list of helpful gear to bring:-        Layers for the weather-        Bug spray (not too much to avoid repelling moths)-    Mosquito head net-        Flashlight-        Insect field guide-        Water-        Snacks- Lawn chair\n\n\n  \n  \n	\n\n\n\n\nMeet this week's guide:\n\nI’m  Alandra Jones \, and I serve at the Squam Lakes Association as a Watershed Resources Assistant. I am originally from upstate New York\, and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Zoology at SUNY Oswego. Growing up in the Finger Lakes region\, I can’t imagine my life without being near a body of water. Apart from learning about wildlife and ecology\, I enjoy learning new skills and hobbies\, especially if they involve the outdoors!\n\n\n\n  \n  \n	\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n	\n\n\n\n\nSLA's Adventure Ecology trips\n\nThroughout the year\, the Squam Lakes Association offers free programs open to the public on a variety of nature and conservation related topics.The Adventure Ecology programs are presented by the Lakes Region Conservation Corps members who perform important conservation work in support of the Association's mission.\n\n\n  \n  \n	\n\n\n\n\nLakes Region Conservation Corps\n\nThe Lakes Region Conservation Corps (LRCC) is an AmeriCorps service program that develops skills and experiences for conservation professionals.
