Squam Speaker Series: New Hampshire’s 52 With A View

Wednesday, August 19, 2020 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Our Squam Speaker Series is held throughout the year on Wednesday evenings. Join us for this month's virtual talk on Wednesday, August 19th, to meet author Ken MacGray, who will discuss his book, New Hampshire's 52 With A View - A Hiker's Guide. Click here to register!

About the talk:

A discussion of the increasingly-popular 52 With A View hiking list, created to be a complement to the New Hampshire 4,000 Footers. We will explore the origin of the list and how it was created by the Over The Hill Hikers from Sandwich, NH, the appeal of the hikes on the list to both experienced and beginner hikers alike, and a new comprehensive guidebook which contains everything you need to explore these peaks.

South Baldface, one of the most majestic and scenic of the 52 With A View peaks, as seen from neighboring Baldface Knob.

About the Speaker:

Ken MacGray is a freelance writer and guidebook author living in southern New Hampshire.

He's written two books so far, the self-published New Hampshire's 52 With A View - A Hiker's Guide (2nd Edition), and the Southern New Hampshire Trail Guide (5th Edition) for Appalachian Mountain Club, which is due out in August 2020. His next project will be as Co-Editor for the 31st Edition of the White Mountain Guide, also for AMC. He will be sharing the duties with long-time White Mountain Guide author and New Hampshire hiking authority Steven D. Smith. Their collaboration will be published in 2022.

The 1st Edition of New Hampshire's 52 With A View - A Hiker's Guide was an enormous success, selling over 2,500 copies through six printings. There has been high demand for the revised and updated 2nd Edition, which looks to be on its way to being well-received by the local hiking community.

Ken began his career in the graphic design field, working as a designer in the advertising and media industries. Before transitioning into writing, he was a member of the website development team at telegram.com, the online division of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette in Worcester, MA, beginning under the ownership of the New York Times. In 2016, he left the news business and relocated to New Hampshire to be closer to the mountains he loves. He's also a photographer but prefers to continue that as a hobby instead of a profession.

He’s a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club’s 4,000 footer club and has completed two rounds of the 52 With A View, among other hiking accomplishments. He has hiked extensively throughout New Hampshire and New England, and can usually be found wandering throughout the hills of the region, exploring new and exciting places both on and off the beaten path.
